The Story of Ohemaa AI
Because all mothers deserve excellent maternal healthcare
In August 2021 when I found out I was pregnant, it was the greatest unexpected blessing I could have imagined. I was abroad yet the thought of going back to the US to give birth filled me with fear. I was in Ghana and I knew Ghanaian doctors some were family, they looked like me and understood the needs of black women. I knew I had agency and advocates were I to give birth abroad. I could not say that with any ease about the US.
According to the CDC Black women boast disproportionately high rates of maternal mortality. Black mothers in the US die at 3 to 4 times the rate of white mothers. A black woman is 22% more likely to die from heart disease than a white woman, 71% more likely to perish from cervical cancer, but 243% more likely to die from pregnancy or childbirth related causes.
Ohemaa AI (OAI) is an app empowering black women to be intentional about healthcare before, (during and after) the start of the pregnancy process. Still in development, our app aims to offer an automated, fully integrated platform to increase patient-physician communication and save lives.
